When she had first awoken in the camp, Isabelle had been utterly afraid for her life, but as the day had worn on, she found that her feeling of dread left her. Fraser kept a close eye on her, and it was almost impossible to escape his attention, but other than that, nobody really paid her much attention, and she didn’t have to be at the mercy of leering looks and lascivious grins. When Fraser had first claimed his group wasn’t bandits, she didn’t entirely believe him, but she saw for herself that they weren’t interested in being evil or cruel. They just wanted to enjoy their lives, so she didn’t feel threatened by any of them.

The moon took over the celestial throne, and stars twinkled overhead as the night set in. Isabelle followed Fraser over to where they were sleeping, and her heart sank at the thought of being tied up to him again. But she wasn’t going to be petulant about it.

Ever since being in the glade together, her mind had been whirring.

While she was afraid of the wilderness, she was still looking for an opportunity to escape and hoped that she would be able to find a road to a nearby town, and then she would get word to her father, Laird Skinner, or the convent.

Or I could try to forge a life for myself.

That last thought was a niggling one at the back of her mind. It was daring, and whenever she thought about it, her heart fluttered rapidly, and she quickly pushed it away. The fact that she had almost died due to some strange fruit dampened her ambition, but she was tired of being at the mercy of other people. She decided that her best chance of fashioning such an opportunity was to behave herself in the hope that Fraser would become complacent towards her and lose focus. It was a slim chance, but it was all she had.

So she helped him unfurl the bedroll and unfold the blanket. They sat down, and she was dismayed when he brought out the rope.

“Is that really necessary? I think today proved that I’m not likely to venture out into the wilderness by myself, especially not during the night. I may be unhappy with my current situation, but I do not wish to end my life,” she said in a harsh tone.

“I cannae take the chance,” Fraser said, and dutifully bound their legs together once again. She looked at how he was working the knot in the hope that she might be able to undo it, but his hands moved too fast for her to glean the secrets, and in the dim light, his movements were obscured. She lay down beside him and breathed deeply, hoping that sleep would come to her soon. Beside her, she felt the steady rhythm of Fraser’s deep breathing. It was like far off thunder. Something was soothing about it, although it could not cool the anguish in her mind.

Her thoughts turned to earlier that day when she held the berry in her hands.
